The first ever GAMMA vs SPARMAX Muay Thai sparring competition was held last Saturday, Feb. 21st. With very little Muay Thai competition to be found in Quebec these days, GAMMA instructor Patrick Charron extended an invitation to our friends at SPARMAX for a small sparring competition. Fighters were matched up by weight and experience and competed in 3 X 2 min. round matches. Here are the results: Raj (GAMMA) vs Philippe (SPARMAX): fought to a draw. Not bad considering Raj is a wrestler who only recently took up Muay Thai and was giving up a few pounds to his opponent. David (GAMMA) vs Pineault (SPARMAX): David took a few good shots early from the heavy-handed lefty which proved to be a little too much for him this time around. Though disapointed by his performance, he promises to come back stronger and has already requested a rematch down the line. Jeremy (GAMMA) vs Remi (SPARMAX): When Jeremy's original opponent failed to show, Remi Gelinas, a 9 year Muay Thai veteran agreed to step in and take his place. Though he was facing an opponent with a great deal more competitive experience, Jeremy more than held his own and gave fans 3 exciting rounds displaying brilliant technique from both sides, leading to a draw from the judges. Luis (GAMMA) vs Louis-Philippe (SPARMAX): Another very exciting match-up, pitting two very technical fighters and fast-paced action. Though less experienced than his SPARMAX rival, Luis showed off his beautiful technique in a hard fought battle. A misplaced knee late in the second round slowed him down though, leading to his opponent's victory. Maxime (GAMMA) vs Martin (SPARMAX): Deemed to be the fight of the night given the combined experience of these two fighters. Maxime was lacking the competition experience that Martin had which led to an easy victory for the SPARMAX fighter. The purpose of this event was to give experience to fighters of both sides in a competitive though respectful atmosphere. Both sides came out of it with their heads held high and will do it again, this time at SPARMAX in Rosemere, on March 21st. Stay tuned for details. |
